Austrian painter Gustav Klimt (1862-1918) began his life in poverty, the second of seven children born to a jewelry engraver. Despite his humble childhood, a scholarship enabled him to study and train at the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts. Recognized as a brilliant artist, he had a tremendous impact on the Art Nouveau movement. He was a founding member of the Vienna Secession, a group of artists who revolted against the traditional styles of the day and encouraged varied and unconventional artistic style. Influences to his style include Egyptian, Classical Greek and Byzantine. Klimt’s paintings are distinguished by his use of highly ornamental gold, silver and colored spirals, swirls and geometric shapes to embellish his subject and his use of symbolism to portray themes of beauty, love, life and death.
